It’s been a rough couple of weeks over here. Daisy and Townes both caught a doozie of a bug after our amazing time at the indoor playground a few weeks ago. In fact, I’m pretty sure if this so-called bug has a name it is Mothra. I’m pretty sure if this bug has a visual representation it’s this guy from Starship Troopers. We have had a veritable smorgasbord of symptoms for going on three weeks now: fever? Check. Diarrhea? Check. Sore throat? Yup. Hacking cough? Indeed. Frickin’ bouncy balls. Was it worth it? I don’t know if I can answer that. But just look at this face. She look pretty happy.
I’m by no means a germaphobe, but if you had been a fly on the wall in our place for the last few days, it’s been pretty grim. And it’s hard to justify that fun if I had known how ill the two of them were going to have been as a result.
And then the little monkeys passed it along to me. I have to say – now that I’ve joined the ranks of the sickie army – my kids are tough as nails. This ain’t no picnic. I’ve been in a world of hurt for going on two weeks now. Though, speaking of picnics – since little man wasn’t feeling so hot we had a somewhat decadent experience last night. Townes got to eat dinner sitting on the sofa! With his food on a pillow! He was dazzled. As the cherry on my cupcake (and without getting into details), my schedule at work has also been unceremoniously changed (thanks Marissa Mayer). So now, rather than the flex-schedule I had been maintaining since Townes was born, I have to return to the traditional 9-5 with my sometimes 3-hour daily commute. This week (my first back in the office full-time), was doubly hard because I can’t check in on the kids the way I can when I am working from home. Knowing they are under the weather and I can’t check in has been excruciating. If I’m ever in a position of influence regarding office culture, I plan to campaign heavily for rights for working moms.
How do you working moms maintain your work-life balance? Do you work in supportive environments? Let me know. I’d love to hear from working moms who have found their sweet spot and how you got there.
Here are a few of my more inspirational links this summer…have a great weekend!
Love this living space.
Still want to sleep in a lighthouse.
